CBS4, a Denver radio station, reported that one of the suspects told authorities they were “going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a … rifle … sighted at 750 yards“. When one of the suspects “was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama”, a CBS4 source said, “he responded in the affirmative”.

Fox News reported that the three men might have links to Sons of Silence, an outlaw motorcycle group, and white supremacists.

Authorities said that the three people has been arrested on firearms and drug charges.

Two rifles, one with a telescopic sight, walkie-talkies, a bulletproof vest, licenses in the names of other people and methamphetamine were found in a truck that was stopped on Sunday morning. One of the rifles was listed as stolen from Kansas.

A US military plane equipped with a powerful laser has moved a step closer to becoming a viable weapon.

Engineers have started flowing chemical fuel through the laser to test its sequencing and control.

This will set up the first test firing of the weapon aboard the aircraft while it is on the ground.

The US Air Force’s Airborne Laser (ABL) is designed to shoot down enemy ballistic missiles in the early stages of their flight.

Speaking at the Campus Progress journalism conference earlier this month, Seymour Hersh — a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist for The New Yorker — revealed that Bush administration officials held a meeting recently in the Vice President’s office to discuss ways to provoke a war with Iran.

During the journalism conference event, I asked Hersh specifically about this meeting and if he could elaborate on what occurred. Hersh explained that, during the meeting in Cheney’s office, an idea was considered to dress up Navy Seals as Iranians, put them on fake Iranian speedboats, and shoot at them.

US presidential hopeful Barack Obama has been given secret service protection far earlier in the campaign than any previous candidate following worries about racist threats, officials said.

Mr Obama, who regularly draws large crowds as he campaigns to become America’s first black president, requested the protection himself, the department of homeland security said last night.

The Homeland security secretary, Michael Chertoff, authorised this and the secret Service “is now implementing that protection”, said Eric Zahren, a secret service spokesman.

Laura Schubert Pearson, aged 17

Laura Schubert Pearson’s lawsuit accusing members of the Pleasant Glade Assembly of God Church of subjecting her to a two-day exorcism ordeal in 1996 that left her so distressed she attempted suicide was dismissed by the Texas Supreme Court last month.

The judges overturned a lower court’s decision awarding her damages and ruled that because Mrs Schubert Pearson’s claims of injury amounted to a religious dispute over church doctrine it would be “unconstitutional” for the court to get involved.

Religious freedom campaigners say the case strikes at the heart of the US Constitution’s First Amendment, which prohibits government interference in the free exercise of religion, and were the US Supreme Court to rule in Mrs Schubert Pearson’s favour, it would signal “the end of church independence and religious freedom” in America.
